Family Prayers
By Ashton Oxenden & C. H. Ramsden

FIRST WEEK—WEDNESDAY MORNING

O LORD GOD of our salvation, graciously hear and answer the prayers which we would now offer up to Thee, in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior.

We are once more met together, to bless Thee as a family for Thy fatherly care over us, and Thy bounty towards us. We thank Thee for the mercies of the past night, and for the life and strength which Thou has renewed to us with the light of another day.

And now we know not, O Lord, what this day may bring forth; but we humbly ask Thee to fit us for its duties, to support us under its trials, and, with every temptation which it may bring, to make for us a way to escape. Give us we pray, daily bread for our bodies, and daily grace for our souls.

Let us not live this day in vain. May we constantly be making some progress in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May we, by Thy help, do all we can this day to promote Thy glory and the good of others.

While we are in the world, O Lord, keep us from the evil of the world. While we are busy in our earthly occupations, keep us mindful of eternal things. May we never forget that we are Thy servants, and that we are not our own, but have been bought with the price of the Savior’s precious blood.

Thy vows, O God, are upon us. We have been dedicated to Thee at our baptism. We are solemnly pledged to serve Thee. Give us grace to fulfill our vows, and to fight manfully under the banner of Christ against the world, the flesh, and the devil. Strengthen us especially to struggle against our besetting sins. Let no sudden assault of the wicked one overcome us; but do Thou ever guard us against the power of his temptations.

Set a watch, O Lord, before our mouth, and keep the door of our lips, that we offend not with our tongues. Preserve us from all hasty or unkind words; and so influence our hearts by Thy grace, that we may both speak and act as becomes Thy people.

Enable us to assist one another in spiritual as well as temporal things. Unite us together in brotherly love. Give us the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit. Teach us to bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Quicken us, O Lord, in Thy way. Thou knows how apt we are to loiter on our road. O help us forward by the power of Thy grace.

Bless those whom we love and if any of them as yet know Thee not, bring them near unto Thyself, and make them truly Thine.

These mercies O Lord, we ask for ourselves and for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

The Lord bless and keep us, the Lord make His face to shine upon us, and give us peace, now and evermore. Amen.
