Family Prayers
By Ashton Oxenden & C. H. Ramsden

FIRST WEEK—SATURDAY EVENING

O GOD, who makes the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice, hear our prayer, and receive our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving for Jesus Christ’s sake.

Thou has brought us in safety to the close of another day and another week. Heavenly Father, what mercies have we throughout this week received daily at Thy hand! How graciously has Thou watched over us; how bountifully has Thou supplied our wants; from how many unseen evils and dangers hasThou preserved us! We thank Thee also that each day Thou hast spoken unto us by Thy Word; and that we have had the privilege of approaching Thee at all times in prayer.

Lord, we acknowledge that we have made most unworthy returns for all Thy many mercies. Pardon, for Christ’s sake, our numberless sins and shortcomings during the week that is past. We have left undone many things which we ought to have done, and we have done much for which our own consciences condemn us. Enter not into judgment with us, O Lord. Deal not with us according to our merits, but according to Thy tender mercies in Christ Jesus our Redeemer.

Do Thou, Lord, quicken our souls, and revive Thy work in us. Thou knows how ready we are to become careless and slothful in the great things which concern our eternal welfare. Grant us, O Lord, Thy quickening grace. May Thy Holy Spirit keep ever fresh in our minds the recollection of all that Christ has done for us, that we may be constrained by His love to yield ourselves a willing sacrifice to Him.

And now, O Lord, prepare us for the rest of Thine own holy Sabbath day. When for a little season we lay aside the toils of the week, may we also lay aside its cares and anxieties. Let nothing disturb and distract us while we wait upon Thee. May we be in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day. Cause us to hunger and thirst after righteousness. Fill us with devout and earnest longings to see Thy power and Thy glory in the sanctuary. May we, as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that we may grow thereby.

Strengthen, O Lord, Thy ministering servants for Thy holy work. Supply them with all that is needful to make them faithful and effectual ambassadors for Thee; and bless them in the message they shall deliver. Let those who labor in hostile lands enjoy Thy special blessing. Uphold them in all difficulties and dangers; strengthen their hands; cheer their hearts; and let them see some precious fruits of all their toil.

Keep us through this night in safety. Refresh us with peaceful rest, so that in body and spirit we may be prepared for the services of Thine own day. And grant, O Lord, that as days and weeks pass away, and being us continually nearer to eternity, we may be made daily more meet the the inheritance of the saints of light. Hear these our supplications as, we pray Thee for the Redeemer’s sake. Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and. the fellowship of time Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.
