Scriptural Meditations…

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in Thy sight,
O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.”  -Psalm 19.14

My heart overflows with a good theme;
I address my verses to the King;
My tongue is the pen of a ready writer. -Psalm 45:1

A cup getting tipped or knocked over is a common occurrence in our household and when it does we quickly find out if the cup was empty or full. This is by no means the suggested way to find out if there is something inside (looking would be a lot easier and a whole lot less messy) but there is no disputing the conclusion.

Unfortunately, unlike the cup, people cannot look inside of us to see if we are empty or full.  They do often find out very quickly however, when we encounter various circumstances and hear the words that pour out of mouths. What pours out quickly reveals what we are full of.  Jesus said, The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart” (Luke 6:45).

Now we all have bad days in which we may find ourselves tired and on edge which and as a result we drop our guards and let our old natures have reign saying things that aren’t edifying and for which we may find ourselves having to seek forgiveness.  However, this should be the exception not the rule. The rule for us, as followers of Jesus Christ, should be words of praise, faith, hope, and love flowing from our mouths, from the fountain of our hearts; hearts that are filled full with the love, goodness, mercy, grace, and glory of God.  Hearts that are daily filled as a result of our continual fellowship with our Lord.

What pours off of your lips when you encounter various circumstances? The Psalmist declares My heart overflows with a good theme; I address my verses to the King; my tongue is the pen of a ready writer (Psalm 45:1). It is quite simple.  If your heart is filled with that which is good then good things will pour off of your tongue.

Does your heart overflow with a good theme? It will not happen on its own. We must be filling our hearts with good things if they are to overflow with the same. Take time this week to fill your heart with that which is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and of good repute (Philippians 4:8). Fill your heart with the Truth – Jesus Christ – the greatest theme of all.

O what a treasure He is! O what a privilege we have to be able to fill our hearts with Him.  Take time to be with Him and allow Him to fill your heart with the beauty of His person, His deity, His very life.  Get into His Word so that you may be filled to the fullness of Christ and then, when you get tipped or bumped this week, He alone will be seen and His praises heard.
