Christian Writings

“Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you;

and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.”  Hebrews 13:7

Over the past few years I have come to the conclusion that much of the popular, contemporary Christian writing is found lacking.  It lacks depth, it lacks sound doctrine, it lacks emphasis on repentance, and it lacks God-centeredness.  A lot of the material published today allows for a feel-good, easy-believism that places our experience above God’s truth (isn’t this what sells?).  We have become a people that brutally twist the Word of God in order to validate our experiences as opposed to making our lives line up with God’s Word.

Another conclusion that I have come to in today’s Christian material is the element of the unknown.  What I mean is that I do not know the writers personally.  I do not know if they really live the things that they write about and proclaim.  Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that we shouldn’t read what they write, but we should do so with holy caution and discernment.

The greater unknown (and concern) for me is the fact that I do not know how these writers will end their lives.  In a time when many are falling away from sound doctrine and turning to a feel-good religion we must be careful not to be so easily taken in by everything that we read or hear.  In Hebrews 13:7 we are told to “Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.”  We are told to consider the result of their conduct.  It can also be said that we are to imitate the outcome of their manner of life.  To do this we must know their life or, if that is not physically possible, we should know how they ended their life.  A preacher told me some years ago that the best mentors were dead men.  What he meant is that by looking to those who have gone before us we know how they ended their life; whether or not they kept the faith.  To these we should look and imitate their faith.

Over these past years I have been reading a great deal from those who have gone before us, taking in the writings of men who kept the faith to the end.  There is such a wealth of pure, sound scriptural writings available to us from our forefathers.  In the weeks ahead I will be sharing with you to some of their rich, deep, and meaty writings.  It is my prayer that you will grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ by the truths that were written and lived by these men.
